Moving towards a cleaner, greener, more sustainable city

A number of Greater Manchester (GM) public sector bodies including Bury, Oldham, Tameside, GM Social Care Partnership, Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) and Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) have already made commitments to reduce their avoidable single-use plastics.

Steps have already been taken at the GMFRS Training and Development Centre in Manchester to move to compostable cups (which bio-grade) and a number of initiatives are underway at fire stations across the city to reduce the amount of plastic waste that is created.

Public Sector Procurement

Work is progressing to identify all of the avoidable single-use products which are purchased under different contracts across the public sector in Greater Manchester. The next step will be to produce a procurement plan detailing more sustainable and environmentally friendly options.

This is the first stage of a much longer journey in supporting public sector bodies across Greater Manchester to reduce their avoidable single-use plastic waste. Keep checking back for more updates as the campaign progresses.
